Intense thunderstorms swept through the United Arab Emirates (UAE), unleashing rainfall equivalent to over a year and a half’s worth of precipitation on Dubai, a desert city-state, within a few hours. The deluge flooded major highways and the international airport.
The rainfall commenced late Monday, saturating Dubai’s sands and roads with approximately 20mm (0.79 inches) of rain, as per meteorological records from Dubai Airport. By 9 am on Tuesday (05:00 GMT), the storms had escalated, persisting throughout the day and pelting the already inundated city with more rain and hail.
